From the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, to stunning beaches and world-renowned observatories, this route offers an unforgettable experience for camper travelers. This 20-day itinerary balances exploration and relaxation, allowing plenty of time to soak in the beauty of each destination while ensuring a smooth return to Santiago.


Days 1-2: Santiago – La Serena (470 km)


The journey starts with a drive north to La Serena, a coastal city with beautiful beaches and access to the stunning Elqui Valley.

  • Attractions: La Serena beaches, Valle de Elqui, pisco distilleries, Mamalluca Observatory.

  • Recommended Camping: Elqui Valley Campground, offering breathtaking night skies.


Days 3-5: La Serena – Bahía Inglesa (400 km)


Continuing north along the Pacific coast, we arrive at Bahía Inglesa, one of Chile’s most beautiful beach destinations with white sand and turquoise waters.

  • Attractions: Playa La Virgen, snorkeling, Pan de Azúcar National Park.

  • Recommended Camping: Bahía Inglesa Campground, located steps from the beach.


Days 6-8: Bahía Inglesa – San Pedro de Atacama (900 km)


A long drive inland takes us to San Pedro de Atacama, the gateway to some of the most surreal desert landscapes on Earth.

  • Attractions: Valle de la Luna, Geysers del Tatio, salt flats, hot springs, stargazing.

  • Recommended Camping: Takha Takha Campground, a great base for desert adventures.


Days 9-10: San Pedro de Atacama – Iquique (500 km)


We descend from the high desert to the coastal city of Iquique, known for its historic architecture and massive sand dunes.

Days 11-12: Iquique – Arica (310 km)

Days 13-14: Arica – Putre (130 km)

Days 15-16: Putre – Antofagasta (760 km)


We begin the return journey with a long but scenic drive southward to Antofagasta, a bustling city by the Pacific Ocean.

  • Recommended Camping: Antofagasta Beach Campground.


Days 17-18: Antofagasta – Copiapó (570 km)


A stop in Copiapó allows for relaxation and a visit to nearby natural attractions before continuing the journey south.

  • Attractions: Nevado Tres Cruces National Park, Ojos del Salado Volcano.

  • Recommended Camping: Copiapó Oasis Campground.


Days 19-20: Copiapó – Santiago (800 km)


The final stretch back to Santiago offers optional stops in La Serena for a last taste of the northern beaches and starry skies.

  • Attractions: Optional detour to Pan de Azúcar National Park or Elqui Valley.

  • Recommended Camping: Overnight stay near La Serena before reaching Santiago.


Tips for Traveling Northern Chile in a Camper


  1. Plan fuel stops carefully, as there are long stretches without gas stations.
